Mosiah 2 - His Kingdom, His Work, His Hands

I have always been taught by Alma’s example in this chapter.  These are not new thoughts, but recycled thoughts.  Why do I say recycled?  Because of the note I wrote in the margin of this page.  I love my hard-bound, hold-it-in-your-hands scriptures.  This is one thing that is lost with our electronic scriptures that we carry with us all day long to be accessed at will.  It's a trade-off, and not the subject of this post.

The people of Alma, the Nephites, are seeing themselves in a bad way as the Amalicites have joined forces with the armies of the Lamanites who are coming toward them with great speed.  They pray!  This is good.  But Alma’s personal prayer is the one that grabs my attention and is one worthy of personal examination.  “O Lord, have mercy and spare my life, that I may be an instrument in thy hands. . . “

There is a lot of work to do in the Kingdom of God as the Lord is hastening His work in these latter days.  We can see it on every hand, i.e. missionary work, Internet resources for sharing the gospel, Internet resources for searching our own ancestors and sharing our work to assist others, ramped up efforts to build temples and to help those who are poor make it to the temple to receive their own endowments.  This is just a few that I’m aware of.   It needs to be the prayer of every covenant individual to desire to be an instrument in the hands of God in this great effort to save His children.  This is about as good a reason as I can think of to keep myself healthy and strong so we can serve multiple missions once my husband retires.  It is a worthy reason to be prudent with our resources.  It is a excellent reason to be studying the scriptures and learning the content so they are part of me, as I hope to someday be teaching others these great principles.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is in its fullness on the earth.  I want to be part of this grand hastening.  But must it be in the mission field?  Not necessarily.  It can and should be in our own neighborhoods and communities.  So what am I doing in the meantime?   I certainly seem to be keeping myself busy.  Am I doing the Lord’s work?  Well, it is an ongoing effort.  Some days are better than others; but the goal is to be His hands, doing His work for His Kingdom, and the eventual return of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
