Alman 37 - A Curse Upon the Land

In Alma 37:28, Alma is telling his son, Helaman, about the history of the people of this land as well as the means the Lord is using to protect his people from the evils that tend to prevail at times.  He tells Helaman in verse 28:  “For behold, there is a curse upon all this land, that destruction shall come upon all those workers of darkness, according to the powers of God, when they are fully ripe, therefore I desire that this people might not be destroyed.” 

Last night I was talking with some highly educated and righteous people about the bleak situation our country is currently in.  Initially the conversation started with our children, and the rise in so many neurological ills that seem unexplainable.  One of the doctors that was talking told of an article he studied where they were able to get the mothers to get down and get dirty with their children – to actually play with them, have eye contact with them and touch them.  The signs of autism and other ailments were diminished considerably.  We have a generation of children who are being raised by part-time mothers – mothers who are distracted and divided in their efforts as mothers by electronics, pursuit of higher education, or in their efforts to help provide a living.  This is impacting our upcoming generation in a big way.

Our conversation last night quickly turned to the concern over children being raised in home by two-parents of the same gender.  What will become of these children?  How will they know the roll they are to play as they mature and start families of their own?  What example will they follow?  Can you imagine the growth of this pernicious lifestyle?

The moral fiber of the world and especially this nation is decaying at an every increasing rate and we are going to reap the rewards of this kind of lifestyle very soon.  The outcome will be the curse of this land as prophesied by Alma to his son Helaman. 

So what are we to do?  How can those of us who see this evil spreading like a fog being fueled by the breeze in the night make a difference?  For one, we must be vigilant in our own homes and families that we set a righteous example.  We must be strictly obedient in keeping the commandments.  This example needs to be seen outside our homes as well.  We must elect officials in our cities, states and country who have morals.  This is getting more and more difficult because of the evil designs of men as well.  Yes, I fear we are headed for a serious train wreck!

However, fear not!  We know the final outcome.  The Lord has a plan.  Our Savior will return to reign upon the earth.  Every knee shall bend and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ.  (Mosiah 27:31) Our biggest responsibility is to remain true to the truth we have been taught and that the Spirit has testified to us is truth, to seek after that truth, to follow the words of the Prophets, to seek them diligently by studying and digesting them from conference talks and to remain true to the faith.
