I know we’re supposed to “liken the scriptures
unto ourselves”, and that’s my goal as I ponder and then write about what I’ve
just read. This chapter is a little
difficult for me, however. I can’t comprehend the people of the Lord
having the provisions, the protection and the space to hold up for seven years
without the enemy having access to them.
How can I draw a parallel?
Well, I’ve written in my margin that this
chapter is a great example of food storage. And it definitely is that. Maybe if we speak more in metaphors than in
actualities, it’s not such a big stretch though. We’ve been told to have food storage. So we know this is a commandment that will be
a protection to us, if heeded. No need
for more discussion on that one.
What are the “protection” and the walls
surrounding the people of the Lord today?
It is the covenants we keep – the covenant of baptism, priesthood
covenants and the covenants we make in the temple. How do these covenants keep us shielded from
the evil army that is battling us? Going
back to our Stake Conference last week, it is not a stretch at all. We are protected by being anxiously engaged
in a good cause, i.e. building the kingdom of God. This is also known as Family History, temple
work and gathering in of our kindred dead.
We’ve been told as we free them from Spirit Prison through vicarious ordinances;
they are then able to help us in our battles against the adversary. So we really need them as much as they need
us.
Everything we do should be toward this end –
gathering – both those beyond this life and those that are still
earthbound. So is our clinic work
considered part of this gathering? Hmmm,
maybe it is. These people need to have
access to medical attention in order to move forward with their lives. If you don’t feel well, nothing else
matters. How can you receive
missionaries or loving neighbors into your lives when you are ill?
So maybe we need to examine each facet of our
lives and see how it is involved in Heavenly Father’s work.
