Moroni 6
Moroni tells us about baptism, forgiveness, and the Holy Ghost
After I went to the temple, I saw the beginning of this chapter just a little differently. At least I understand more what I was reading.
Before we are baptized, we agree to take upon us the name of Christ – to be His people. But first we meet this requirement as well: We must bring forth fruit that proves we are worthy of it. (v1)
What is the fruit that makes us worthy to take on the name of Christ and thus be baptized? I believe there is a clue in the 4th Article of Faith: “We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are, first, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, second, repentance, . . .” We will repent of our sins. We must have faith that we can be forgiven of those sins and that it is through our Savior, Jesus Christ, that they are forgiven. We see it happen all the time, and it is a miraculous experience. We believe Christ can do it. We believe Christ.
I’m so very grateful for this miracle in the gospel. I know the Atonement of Jesus Christ is a real thing. I know we can repent and move forward - never looking back at those things of which we have been forgiven. Oh, we must never forget the miracle of forgiveness, but not let those things we’ve done ever trip us up again. We must believe in the power of the Atonement to remove those sins from our record and move on. How do we move on? By doing the Lord’s work. That is our fruit. Works? Perhaps.
James 2:26 says: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
So what is my assignment for this day? I hope it is sufficient to say: Carry on! I strive daily to do His work. The older I get, the more that is my focus. Some days are easier than others, but it is always my goal.
