Never tempt God

Alma 30

Korihor preaches false doctrine. He is the antichrist. He contends with Alma and asks for a sign that there is a god – a foolish thing for anyone to attempt. Alma doesn't want to tempt God, but Korihor insists so he said “be it unto God”. Korihor is struck dumb, i.e. He cannot speak. You wouldn't think in today's world this would be huge, but then it was. He became a begger for his food. The people did not have compassion on him, trod him down and he died.

There are many who don't believe. What made Korihor's story so different?
  1. He preached his disbelief and tried to convince others that he was speaking truth and that they were wasting their time worshiping God.
  2. He wanted a sign. Oh that is a dangerous place to be.
What is the end of this pitiful man? “. . .he was run upon and trodden down, even until he was dead.” And the last verse says: “And thus we see. . .” Again, this is a teaching verse and we must pay attention. “Thus we see. . . . that the devil will not support his children at the last day, but doth speedily drag them down to hell.”

How does this apply to me today? There are many in the world – even in my close circles – who claim not to believe in God. I must continue to hold strong and speak boldly of Jesus Christ and his atonement. I must not let these people pull me down to their level. Critical that I remain strong, continue to study the scriptures, know the doctrine, strengthen my testimony of Jesus Christ and the truth of his gospel and bear my testimony whenever the opportunity comes. In doing so, I just may have a positive effect on the life of another. I will also be strengthening my own defenses against the evil the is all around.
