Alma 38
Alma talks to his son Shiblom who has brought him much joy. He's been a straight arrow all his life. It is a short chapter packed with good advice to all our children, but especially to those who have never strayed.
I am so very grateful to be able to relate to this chapter. I too have a son (as well as a couple of daughters) who has brought us nothing but joy. He always wanted to have a missionary haircut and be clean shaven. He's never deviated in his course. What a blessing this is in a parent's life. Is there advice to a son (or daughter) like this? Absolutely!
- Remember! (v5)
- Trust God that you will be delivered out of your trials, troubles and afflictions. There will be trials in life regardless of your goodness. What is it we are supposed to trust in? That we will be lifted up at the last day IF we trust the Lord enough to keep his commandments.
- Bridle your passions (v12) We all have them and they all need to be controlled.
- Avoid pride and boasting (v11)
- Be bold, but not overbearing (v12)
- Refrain from idleness (v12) I'm afraid this one is for all of us.
- Keep prayers sincere and heartfelt (v13)
- Acknowledge unworthiness before God at all times (v14)
Yes, there is plenty of counsel even for the righteous son or daughter. Why this counsel? (v15) So that the Lord will continue to bless as he has done in the past.
How does this affect me this day? Of course, I must follow this counsel as well. But this day, I praise my Heavenly Father that I have a few children who have been as Shiblom – faithful in keeping their commandments and thus bringing joy to their parents. Thanks, guys!
