Alma 34
Amulek speaks to the people on the Atonement – the logic of the Atonement, prayer and that this life is the time to prepare to meet God. We are all responsible to work out our own salvation.
A very sobering discourse – one I would encourage anyone struggling with their testimony to read out loud and slowly. There is much to digest – especially for those who may be weak. Maybe I should say for all of us. I have two points I could focus on. One is prayer. I love this chapter for its thoroughness on the topic. Basically, we should have a prayer in our heart at all times. It is not wrong to pray for success in your temporal affairs. However, that success needs to be used in being charitable to others. Otherwise, we are as dross and will be cast out in spite of all the blessings we've received in this life. (v29)
The other topic is the fruit of repentance. The fruit of repentance can be found between verses 31-41. I'll do my best to list them, because there are many.
- Immediately the great plan of redemption is brought to you. This is huge! I've heard entire talks be dedicated to this one thought. If I can wait to repent until just before I die, I can still be redeemed if I profess faith in Christ. This is a dangerous game to play for two reasons. 1) We can't know when we're going to die and may not get the opportunity to profess our faith in Christ. 2) All the blessings we will miss out on because of choosing Satan's plan, knowing full well it is wrong! (v31-35)
- Cease to contend against the Holy Ghost (v38) What does it look like to contend against the Holy Ghost? Perhaps it is arguing against the truths of the gospel. Saying you don't believe it.
- You will take upon you the name of Christ
- You will be humble. What is humility? Willingness to be taught.
- You will worship God.
- You will live in Thanksgiving daily.
- Pray continually to be led away from temptations
- You will have patience.
- Bear all manner of afflictions. What does it look like to bear one's afflictions? Maybe not complain when the going gets tough. Not shake your fist at God because you don't have the life you want. Maybe it is not being grateful for the life you have.
- You won't revile against those who cast you out for whatever reason. What does that look like? Maybe it is not speaking badly about those you think are your enemies for whatever reason. Having unkind feelings about those you think for some reason don't like you.
- You will have hope for a better day.
A big list of traits to work on daily regardless of your standing in the church or otherwise.
