Where is my treasure?

3 Nephi 13

Jesus teaches the Nephites – the Lord’s Prayer, to lay up treasures in heaven.  The twelve are given instructions in their position as ministers – to not be concerned about temporal things.

He tells the people to lay up for themselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust doth not corrupt.  In v21 he says, “For where your treasure is there will your heart be also”.  At some point in time I wrote a note to cross reference D&C 88:22 says “For he who is not able to abide the law of a celestial kingdom cannot abide a celestial glory.”  I’ve written in the margin that this is a measuring stick.  It is a measuring stick for what?  For me to measure where I am?  What do I treasure?  Am I embracing and living a Celestial Law here on earth?  If so, then I will be comfortable in the Celestial Kingdom.  Conversely, if the law I am living on earth is a Telestial Law, then it is there that I will be most comfortable.  I believe this is what Joseph Smith taught.  So the lesson on this verse is to examine my treasures.  What do I treasure?  Is it the things of a Celestial glory?  What have we been promised in a Celestial Glory?   Is it that we will be with our family? Our loved ones?  Then we need to learn how to appropriately treasure them in this life.  As young parents we should obviously be teaching them the laws of a celestial glory so that when they grow up, that will be what they treasure as well and will live accordingly.  If the things we treasure are of the world, then I’m really clueless on how those treasure will be enjoyed since they are corruptible in nature.  Our families are not.  Our knowledge is not.  Our affections are not.  This verse makes it clear that it should be no real surprises when we leave this earthly existence.

Jesus tells the people to “. . .seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (v33)  All what things?  He had just been talking about temporal things such as food and clothing.  But then again, at this point he is speaking to the twelve in their news duties.  Still, it is clear to me that we need to seek first the kingdom of God.  In doing so, we are able to see His hand in our lives and we can see the blessings.
