Alma 5 – A burning chapter. Alma preaches to the people and stresses the importance of the word and its power to free us from the bondage of sin.
There are numerous topics in this chapter that I could focus on, but the one that snagged me this morning was the thought that hearing and reading the word of God is critical to our salvation. Why is that? The scriptures come with a power and a promise of salvation. They have the power to change hearts, which changes lives.
I remember when we were going through a very difficult stage with one of our teenagers. It wasn’t fun around here. I believe the power of the word to change hearts, as I had experienced it for myself. I decided to try this promise on my daughter. I started to slip a note with a scripture reference under her door each night for her to read and hopefully ponder. This went on for quite a while. Was a change immediate? No. But in a short time, we moved from this point and her testimony grew and she is enjoying the blessings of the gospel.
