Alma 35 – Since Alma 35 was short in length and on something to ponder, I chose to spend my time this morning in response to Mom’s concern she mentioned last night that Dad will introduce her to wife #2 when they next meet. That was a new one on me and left me pondering in the temple where I did not have access to my scriptures.
2 Nephi 2:25 “. . . and men are, that they might have joy.” Not only that, but at the creation, all things were created that they might have joy in that creation.
In Alma 40 Alma explains what “becometh of the souls of men from this time of death to . . . resurrection?” Verse 12 makes it clear they rest from troubles, care and sorrow. They are in a state of happiness.
Matthew 22:30 makes it clear that in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage.
Mom’s concern comes from 2 Nephi 14:1 where it says “. . . seven women shall take hold of one man. . .” Whenever we read the words “in that day” in the scriptures, I have been told that it means the latter days, aka our day. Certainly we see there are more righteous and temple-ready women than men today. This does not translate to the afterlife in my opinion.
These few items are enough to convince me Dad is not looking nor even interested in increasing his number of wives. For one, would it not increase his “troubles, care and sorrow” given the fact it would hurt Mom? And two, because he is without a body, I would assume he is also devoid of physical passions. Otherwise, why were those resurrected beings at the time Christ was resurrected so happy to have their bodies back? If that isn’t enough, we know Dad well enough to know he is busy doing the work he’s been assigned on the other side. I’m convinced that work included the softening of Stephanie’s heart at the very beginning of his angelic ministering. I have imagined him to be my protecting angel at times when I’ve been riding my bike. He has a large posterity with many lacking spiritually. That alone could keep him quite busy. I am content that we need not worry at this point that Dad will have a wife #2 when we greet him next. I would welcome any other viewpoint.
