Parenting

Alma 39 – I think the story of Corianton is one of the more comforting episodes in the Book of Momon for me.  Could “commanding” one of your children to keep the commandments really be as easy as Alma makes it look in verse 12?  The fact that Corianton goes on to be a great missionary after his discretion is proof that the Lord will bless those who keep His commandments, repent, and serve him.  It also says a little about Corianton.  He obviously had respect for and faith in his father to have even allowed the conversation.  He also had enough faith to turn away from his destructive behavior.  Humility was another attribute he possessed.

How does this apply to me?  As a parent, am I doing enough to bring an errant daughter to change?  Do I even know how?  Alma was pretty straight forward.  This same tactic in today’s youth will only turn them away.  But I need to find more ways of bearing my testimony to truths without preaching.

I think one of my favorite lines is from v8:  “. . . ye cannot hide your crimes from God.”  This is a truth that I believe eats at the soul to where the courage it takes to change is less than the guilt it creates not to change.
