Light or Darkness - The Choice is yours

Alma 40 - Alma does not mince words.  He tells Corianton what to expect when he dies – what we all can expect.

Verse 11 – All men (women) return “home to that God who gave them life.”  I believe that is Christ as He is the father of our souls, if I understand correctly.

Verse 12 – If you’re righteous – a state of happiness called paradise, a state of rest, peace, trouble from care and sorrow.

Verse 13-14 – If you’re wicked, aka those who chose evil works, are cast out into outer darkness . . . weeping and gnashing of teeth.  It will be awful and fearful because of the wrath of God which will come after the resurrection.

I’m a little confused.  What happened to the missionary work that we are told is going on in the afterlife (D&C 138-:30) during the three days between Christ’s death and resurrection.  He organized his forces (those righteous followers) to carry “the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men;”
This really isn’t a contradiction.  The darkness is spiritual darkness – I would think similar to the darkness we experience when we turn away from light in this life – especially after we’ve experienced the light.  Since we return to that God who gave us life, and experience the “light” for at least a moment, wouldn’t being removed from the “light” be an outer darkness?  I would think so.  Since Christ is the “light”, they will remain in that darkness until they accept Christ as their Savior and redeemer at which time they can then progress, if that is what they choose to do.
